A concert not to be missed. The bassoon is rarely featured as a solo or chamber music instrument, since it is mostly relied upon as part of a large orchestral section. The accordion has a unique role in the world of classical music. How about the two together? Now that doesn't happen every day! They definitely deserve to be showcased by such prominent artists as Mathis Kaspar Stier and Julius Schepansky from Germany, invited to perform at the Rising Stars series, launched by the European Concert Hall Organisation with the aim of showcasing young talents.
Awarded second prize at the prestigious ARD International Music Competition, Mathis Kaspar Stier is equally keen to play solo pieces, as well as perform in chamber or large orchestras. His repertoire includes early music and contemporary pieces alike, and he doesn't shy away from improvisation either, as shown on his debut CD entitled Sentiment (published by Alpha Classics). He has been the solo bassoonist of WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne since 2016. A globetrotting accordionist, Julius Schepansky is a true musical omnivore, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician: From Bach to Mozart, to Sibelius and Janáček, there is no great music that he shies away from performing. His repertoire includes works dedicated to him, and he also ventures into the realm of jazz. He has toured several European countries and Japan, and his talent has been recognised with various awards and prizes. The versatile programme of these two artists features Baroque pieces by Philipp Friedrich Böddecker and Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as modern pieces by composers such as Roger Boutry, Lepo Sumera and Paula Matthusen. Rising Stars concerts always feature a contemporary premiere, this time by Icelandic composer María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir.
